What Is the Emotional Guidance Scale?
The emotional guidance scale is a system designed by Abraham Hicks that places all range of human emotions on a scale from feelings of disempowerment to feelings of empowerment. It is a framework for you to understand where your current emotion lays in terms of how empowering your belief about a subject is.
The more empowered you feel about what you want, the higher vibration you have and the more easily it will manifest for you, so it is important to know where your emotions currently are so that you can climb up the scale!
Here is a list of the full range of emotions according to Abraham. Joy is the highest, most empowered emotion (1) while fear is the most powerless emotion (22).
Joy / Knowledge / Empowerment / Freedom / Love / Appreciation
Passion
Enthusiasm
Positive Expectation / Belief
Optimism
Hopefulness
Contentment
Boredom
Pessimism
Frustration / Irritation / Impatience
Overwhelment
Disappointment
Doubt
Worry
Blame
Discouragement
Anger
Revenge
Hatred/Rage
Jealousy
Insecurity / Guilt / Unworthiness
Fear / Grief / Desperation / Despair / Powerlessness
An important thing to understand about the emotional guidance scale is that you have an individual emotion/vibration for each topic you think about (relationships, money, work, etc.) as well as an overall vibration you tend to be at the most. So you could have a relatively high vibration overall and might resonate at optimism on average but then have a really low vibration of insecurity when it comes to trying to snag a boyfriend.
How Can I Measure My Emotions?
You measure your emotions by thinking about the desired topic, and seeing what feelings come up. You then match the emotion of what you are feeling to the scale.
Abraham's emotional guidance scale can admittedly seem a little complicated at first, so an easier way to think about where your emotions lay is to place where you feel on this simpler scale:
When you think about money or your family life, do you feel generally sad? Just "okay"? Excited? Getting a sense of how you feel in broad terms can help you determine whether you are on a positive or negative track towards manifesting what you want.
An even more simplistic version of measuring your emotions is to just say to yourself, do I feel good or bad about this? You can then use methods like pivoting to raise your vibration.
How to Raise Your Vibration on the Emotional Guidance Scale
There are a lot of great ways to raise your vibration, the main ones of which I've listed in depth here. The simplest way to raise your vibration, however, is to "pivot" and choose a thought that feels slightly better. Emphasis on "slightly" - trying to go from sadness to joy is going to most likely be way too big of a jump and will not work.
You may have to incrementally work your way from "I'll never have a boyfriend" to "It may be possible that I might one day have a boyfriend" instead of trying to convince yourself that perfect men will fall at your feet everyday, for instance.
Another thing worthy of mentioning as well is that most everyone has that one "thing" that is really hard for them to manifest. For some it is money, for others it may be love. You may desperately want to lose weight or have a mysterious medical condition that will not go away.
It is very unlikely that you will be able to immediately raise your vibration to pure joy and empowerment on that subject immediately, and may have to do several "rounds" in which you find more deep-seated limiting beliefs you were not aware of until now to process and release. This is really normal and although it may be frustrating, you are making progress on it. You can think of it as a spiral:
As you can see, even though you keep uncovering limiting beliefs, your overall vibration is still higher than it originally. This is because seemingly individual topics like "money or "love" are actually comprised of many different beliefs pertaining to the topic. Your average vibration around love or money is determined by all of the individual beliefs that pertain to the subject.
A commonly used example of this is around money. At your current vibration, you may find it easy to manifest $70,000 a year, but the idea of making $200,000 seems impossible. Or maybe you make $200,000 already but making a million dollars seems out of reach! You can always reach for a better-feeling thought and let go of lower vibrational emotions.
Anger: The Most Misunderstood Emotion
The reason that most people get stuck in fear and sadness is because they are unable to give themselves permission to feel angry.
Culturally in the US (and other places as well), displaying anger is seen as a bad thing. We teach our children that it is wrong to be angry and they learn to shut down or feel shame about their anger.
The problem with this is that when we are afraid of our anger, we get stuck in what is known as the "cycle of doom". We will start to work on raising our vibration up the emotional guidance scale, start to progress into anger (a natural state), and then get scared or ashamed and shut ourselves down.
Eventually, however, you will get angry again as your body naturally knows how to work itself through the emotional scale. And when you suppress anger, eventually it will no longer be able to be contained and you will either let it all out in a really volatile way. This is where you find yourself screaming at your husband or kids without really understanding why.
Anger feels empowering in the moment because it feels better than sadness or fear, but then you will start to feel some shame about taking it out on others. You bring yourself back down to complete powerlessness, only to start the cycle over again!
To have a constructive anger release and allow yourself to successfully work your way up the emotional guidance scale, it is important to make sure that you are not skimming over anger. Allow yourself to feel your rage!
The Recap
Emotions lay on a scale from feelings of powerlessness to feelings of empowerment. To raise your vibration, you "pivot" and align yourself with a slightly better feeling thought. Make sure not to skip over anger. You got this!
